2:20 am. Driving in the

February 17th, 2002

2:20 am. Driving in the blackness eastbound on I-30 from Amanda and Connie’s. Matt and Dave one minute ahead. Denise, Charles, and Lauren minutes behind. Westbound, fifty feet ahead, an SUV knocks another car into the center guardrail. Said SUV takes flight and flips back onto westbound I-30. Debris rains on my car as I pass.

Pick up the cell phone, dial 911. Other people have reported it and rescue teams are on the way. Press End. Firetruck races by. I’m impressed by the speedy response. I hope that if I’m ever in an accident, the rescuers come as quick.

“Thank you God,” I repeat aloud for a good five minutes after calling 911. Thank you for guardrails. Thank you for clarity. Thank you for watching over me. Thank you for not sending the SUV over the car and into my lanes because who knows how my car or myself would react. Thank you God.

I really wanted to call Matt, but decided to wait until I knew he would probably be home. 2:50 was the plan. He lives ten minutes away and had to drop off Dave. At 2:40, he called. “Are you okay?” he asked. I replied, “I just saw a horrible accident. I was going to call you. Why did you call?” “I just knew I had to.”
