I bought some Silly Putty
March 25th, 2002
I bought some Silly Putty this weekend with the full intention of giving it to someone as a gift. Instead, I decided to keep it for myself (and gave them two cans of silly string instead). (I just started and ended a sentence with instead. I have amazing grammatical skills).
I love this stuff. I’ve never had any silly putty of my own before. I’ve been molding it into shapes, stretching it out as thin as it will go, smashing it onto stuff and seeing the impression it makes. I like rolling it into a ball and then smashing it into my palm and seeing the tiny print that is left from the impression of the lines from my hands. Such fun! Whee!
Obviously, I need a hobby.

Warning - Do not put in hair. A kid did that and ended up having to get hair shaved off. It would NOT come out!
You can order silly putty in bulk, in quantities of 5 lbs or 100 lbs. (Note: when referencing 100 lbs of silly putty in casual converation, be sure to speak in your best Barry and Levon “$240 worth of pudding” voice.)
Looking at the photo of the 5 lb glob of silly putty, I have the overwhelming urge to buy one, so I can hold the entire block of putty above my head and throw it on a cement slab as hard as possible. Must. Control. Urge. To. Buy.
Dan rocks my world!
Does anybody remember when silly putty could be used to transfer the comics by pressing the putty on the newspaper? What happened to that feature? Does it now violate copyright law? And what chemicals are required for all that? Silly putty has come a long way…or maybe too far.
Ewww. Silly Putty gets stuck to the little volume buttons on my keyboard.
Roger - Yeah, I think it was a copyright issue… Lame
ok… i think i’ve got a theme for our next party. who wants to chip in for the 100 lbs?
don’t eat it.
{muffled} why….? tastes o.k….
Ooh, I used to love using the ‘Putty with the comics–so fun! I can’t believe they took that joy away from today’s children for some stupid reason that kids don’t even think about.
I can’t find anything online about there being a copyright issue, which I agree, is ridiculous. I think it’s more likely because of the shift to soy-based inks by most newspapers. They leave less residue. Someone, please tell me if I am wrong–not knowing is driving me batty!
ari’s right. the problems in the paper, not in the putty. my silly putty seems to pick up ink just fine off those travel circulars you pick up at denny’s.
Ah, Silly Putty! A failed experiement that wasn’t such a failure afterwords, becuase it’s a lot better than what they were trying to make. =) “Oh look Silly Putty! *Runs off to play with it*”
Geeklab, hehe!
Never had Silly Putty? Poor Leia! I can remember being about 5 years old and playing with the stuff for hours on end! Now about that 5 lb block of Silly Putty - can you imagine how happy that would make some child? Five POUNDS of Silly Putty? Wheee! What fun!
