Dallas 106.7 FM - KKDL

September 20th, 2002

Since early August, there has been a new radio station floating along the airwaves in the Dallas/Fort Worth market. Wednesday night, I was reminded of this fact when I rode to the DFWblogs Cocktail Event with Karen, who had 106.7 on in her car. The station is not playing any commercials and only rarely pauses to broadcast “This is KKDL, Muenster/Dallas/Ft. Worth. 106.7.”

I had not heard any identification, so I decided to do some sleuthing into what is going on over the 106.7 frequency.

Poking around the FCC web site, I found that the station allowed on the 106.7 frequency was called KKDL and came out of Muenster, Texas. The station is newly owned by Entravision, a Hispanic broadcaster that has both television and radio holdings, mostly in the southeast.

KKDL recently changed from call letters KXGM and frequency 106.5, where it was a 6000 watt station broadcasting oldies to Muenster, TX. Under the new ownership by Extravision, the station has been moved to 106.7 on the dial and upgraded to a full C signal license, allowing higher power or 100,000 watts [source]. With the increased power comes increased range, so now listeners in Dallas and Fort Worth can tune in.

Recent Station Developments [source]:
8/08/02 - KXGM 106.5 signed off.
8/09/02 - KXGM 106.7 signed on as a full class C station, testing on-and-off with a loop of rhythmic AC (Adult Comtemporary).
8/14/02 - KXGM 106.7 Muenster TX/Dallas/Fort Worth changed calls to KKDL

Station Details [source]:
Owner: Entravision
Co-owned: KZMP, KRVA, KZMP-FM, KTCY
Facilities: 2034′ 74 kw C
78 mile radius coverage area
Transmitter: 33° 26′ 13″ N 97° 29′ 5″ W
3.9 miles NNW of Greenwood; 48 miles N of Ft Worth; 61 miles NW of Dallas; 67 miles ESE of Wichita Falls

It’s unsure if the station will keep its Rhythmic AC format. It could be that they are merely using the dance loop while they get the structure in place to completely launch a new format. Most Extravision stations are hispanic format.

If you like what you are hearing on 106.7, call or write the General Manager of the Dallas Extravision properties and let him know [source]:

Thanks so much for looking this up!! I’ve been meaning to research it for sometime now. I’m loving the dance music on the way to work and on the way home. Even though it is a loop (and I’m actually listening enough to have figured that out a couple days ago).

About kkdl. I hear this one song and love it. It starts with a mysterious sound then come in the cellos playing a simple tune. It is mostly cello, but has an sound similar to bells. There is only one song that plays that fit that description. I would really love to know what that song, or at least a site where I could find the playlist.

I loved the dance music, but when it switched to Hip-Hop, you lost me because there are 5 other stations playing the same thing. Now you are going to latino music. You have lost me for good and alot of other listeners who loved the dance format.
    Thanks for nothing.
