Candy heart conspiracy

February 14th, 2003

Just because I don’t have a valentine of my own doesn’t mean I can’t indulge in some of the sugary delights of the holiday. The messages on these hearts, though, seem to be pushing some sort of agenda. Are candy heart makers building an army of over-sugared intelligentsia? I smell conspiracy.

Next thing you know, candy hearts are going to say things like “say no to drugs,” “premarital sex is a moral failure,” and “war with Iraq is a necessary fulfillment of the administration’s goals.”

Just the other day I heard that Scholastic’s stocks were down and they claimed it was due to their book clubs! I gave my gifted classes small boxes of those hearts. Guess I should have given my students with reading problems those, too instead of chocolate candy bars!

I read an article about the candy hearts. Every year, they pick a certain topic to focus on and promote. This year was reading. Next year, who knows?

Candy Heart Conspiracy? Umm…would you mind terribly if I used that for the name of my next band? I think I’d work well for an alternative-pop band.
