Robble Robble

July 30th, 2003

I have to write a headline about a McDonald’s robber.

I am finding it very hard to resist the urge to make a Hamburglar joke.

It’s oh-so-quiet…

July 25th, 2003

It’s about to get very, very quiet around here.

Due to some odd communication between Speakeasy (our DSL provider), SBC (circuit provider), AT&T (another DSL provider) and some mysterious fourth party, our DSL at the house has been disconnected permanently.

Three weeks before we asked them to.

Technically, Speakeasy quit giving us service four weeks before our one-year commitment was complete. Suddenly, AT&T started providing our DSL last Friday. They finally wised up to that Thursday. (Update, 12:30pm Friday: We’ve got up and down service from AT&T, though now that I’ve told you, it’s sure to go down.)

Matt made numerous calls to Speakeasy who said that someone requested a disconnect and a switch of service. It wasn’t either of us! Matt’s fighting it out with Speakeasy, trying to figure out from SBC just who authorized the switch, and trying to get our $40 back if they aren’t going to give us service.

So, no more DSL at the house. I’m moving everything Saturday to the new apartment, anyways (do you want to help move? email me before midnight Friday and I’ll send you the evite to the “Belongings Relocation Party”!).

I haven’t exactly figured out my plan for internet service at the new dwelling. I’ll probably do dial-up for a bit while I’m getting settled and getting all my new bills in order.

It’s about to get very, very quiet around here.

Inkblots Magazine

July 18th, 2003

Several months ago, renaissance man Geoffrey Long asked me to write him some words for his web magazine, Inkblots Magazine. Today, my story was published. I present to you: Desperation and Apathy in Mississippi. It’s part of a great issue with works by Kevin Smokler, Heather Champ, Derek Powazek, Rannie Turingan, and Ernie Hsiung. Read it all, I dare you.

New phone goodness

July 17th, 2003

I don’t think you appreciate how awesome my new phone is. You can really only fully comprehend how awesome is is when you see it compared to my old phone:

new phone on right

The old phone is fully 3/4″ thick. The new? A slim 7/16″. And the weight? I barely realize the new phone exists!

No more “Is that your laptop?” jokes for me!

You can commence drooling.

Movin’ On Up!

July 15th, 2003

I have decided on a place to live and it rocks. It’s about 850 square feet in Lakewood, with hardwood floors and amazing built-in shelves, cabinets, and architectural accents. The apartment is just up the street from Mark and Jeremy, so if I ever need a cup of sugar, I can mosey on down to their abode.

I’m sending the landlord my application info tomorrow, which always freaks me out just a bit. Cross your fingers for me.

Thanks to all you wonderful people for weighing in on the places. The one I settled on wasn’t from the original batch that I looked at. I lucked into driving past this one and being amazed.

For what it’s worth, I looked at places near work in Irving and couldn’t bring myself to move there. I’m spoiled by East Dallas and I don’t think you could get me to move anywhere vanilla like the places I saw in Irving.

MOVING PARTY JULY 26! I buy you food, you move my stuff!

I got a new phone! The folks at Sprint gave me a super deal, so now I can talk on the phone for more than 3 minutes at time! So call and message me!

Tunica Trip Travelogue: Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.

I’m amused in a way I probably should not be that the Uristat I’m taking for my self-diagnosed UTI is turning my pee bright orange.

Some of my co-workers know about my blog and I’m not too sure about that sentence I just wrote.

Batch Replace is my bestest friend ever today.

Brief Update

July 11th, 2003

Wow. Thanks to everyone who has weighed in on the great apartment hunt! That was only one day’s top results. I spent yesterday hunting around more in both Irving (near work) and Lakewood, and may have found the winner. I have one more place to check today and I’m going to look at Option #2 again when there aren’t workers doing the floors inside. I’ll hopefully let you know how that goes later today.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

July 9th, 2003

Day 1 of apartment hunting down. No places jumped out at me as being amazing. Here are the top three options at this time:

Option #1: Efficiency - $500, approx 400sf
Pros
» All Bills Paid (electric, gas, water)
» Huge closets
» Remodeled kitchen
» Laundry facilities very close
» Front door in center of complex/courtyard, opens to pool area
» Neighborhood is decent
» $77 move-in (deposit and application)
» Found complex using free moving service, so could get a lot moved for free
» CH/A
» Gated community, gated parking
Cons
» Only SE exposure is through bathroom window (not great for DirecTV dish)
» A bit awkward in layout
» Not good grassy area immediately evident for Gracie
» Berber carpet (not that this is bad, I just loves me some hardwoods)
» Not sure what I’d do with all my crap (maybe this is a good thing – could
stand to get rid of a lot)
Option #2: 1/1 in fourplex - $550, approx 600sf
» Street lined with awesome houses, old big trees
» Neighborhood is good
» Floors being refinished right now (hardwoods!)
» Big closets
» Yard in back
» Water paid
» Free washer/dryer in building
» Excellent dish placement possibilities
» CH/A
» Parking behind building
» Cute staircase leading to unit
» Unit is on back of house
» Odd layout
» Bathroom has very 1980s fixtures (wood, etc)
» Oddly placed closets
» Smallish bedroom
» Yard not fenced
» Weird light fixtures

Option #3: 1/1 in Melrose Place-esque building - $625,
650sf

» Looks out at pool
» Built-in shelving in living area and in closet
» Huge walk-in closet
» Telephone stand built-in
» Tub just resurfaced
» Good-sized bedroom
» Covered, assigned parking
» Gated community
» Not sure about dish placement
» Berber carpets
» Wall-unit for air
» One month’s rent for deposit
» Building is painted a ugly gray color
» Really more money than I want to spend

Which would you choose?

My Facts Of Life

July 3rd, 2003

You take the good, you take the bad, you take it all and there you have:

Good
» Getting to see my friends Darcy, Joe, Chad, Chris, Jay, and Rob again. Especially good seeing Joe and Chris, who I haven’t seen in ages.
» Seeing aforementioned friends all cleaned up and in suits and tuxes! Meow!
» Getting to demonstrate my HTML prowess at work
» This weekend: road trip to the casinos and Graceland, big pimpin’ style
» Popcorn my dad made on the stove, shoved into gallon ziploc bags, still fresh and tasty on Thursday
» First real paycheck in forever coming soon!
» Lee, the overnight security guard in my office building, who last night told me that she’s worked the night shift for 33 years. She did it so she could be home for her kids. She lost two husbands that way, but her kids turned out just fine.
» Cookie cake
» Totally digging the new job
» Found some good deals on DirecTV/TiVos for when I move out on my own
» Daiquiris on a deck on the beach, even if it is drizzling
» Audio Books for the commute to work
» Made the code mentioned below work! Hoo-wah!

Bad
» Cell phone only lets me talk for three minutes before dying
» Made last rent payment on The House (not so much bad as sad)
» Need to find place to live - stay in super cool neighborhood or move to (bleh) Irving?
» Loco’s - my favorite restaurant, that I visit every time I am home, really let me down this time
» The machine I’m testing my code on at work is about 50 feet down the hall, so every time I make one small change, I have to run to another department to check and see if it works. Most likely, it didn’t, so: rinse, repeat.
