It’s oh-so-quiet…

July 25th, 2003

It’s about to get very, very quiet around here.

Due to some odd communication between Speakeasy (our DSL provider), SBC (circuit provider), AT&T (another DSL provider) and some mysterious fourth party, our DSL at the house has been disconnected permanently.

Three weeks before we asked them to.

Technically, Speakeasy quit giving us service four weeks before our one-year commitment was complete. Suddenly, AT&T started providing our DSL last Friday. They finally wised up to that Thursday. (Update, 12:30pm Friday: We’ve got up and down service from AT&T, though now that I’ve told you, it’s sure to go down.)

Matt made numerous calls to Speakeasy who said that someone requested a disconnect and a switch of service. It wasn’t either of us! Matt’s fighting it out with Speakeasy, trying to figure out from SBC just who authorized the switch, and trying to get our $40 back if they aren’t going to give us service.

So, no more DSL at the house. I’m moving everything Saturday to the new apartment, anyways (do you want to help move? email me before midnight Friday and I’ll send you the evite to the “Belongings Relocation Party”!).

I haven’t exactly figured out my plan for internet service at the new dwelling. I’ll probably do dial-up for a bit while I’m getting settled and getting all my new bills in order.

It’s about to get very, very quiet around here.

Oh that sucks. A similar thing happened to a friend of mine at GM. His DSL provider went belly-up. Meanwhile, someone had purchased the company, but sent out an announcement that it would be a full six months before service was restored. He lived out in a rural area, so no other providers had service where he was.

Good luck on getting new service. Or go cable. It’s a bit faster!

Best dial-up provider I have found is Juno. Just $9.95/month for good service, $14.95/month for their “high-speed” hookup (which I use). Sometimes you have to turn off the “SpeedBand” if you want more detail in pictures, but I have been very satisfied with their service overall. Just wish I had bought some of their stock when it was $3 – $4.00, now it is in the mid-twenties.
