Learning is FUNdamental
But if I were to go back to college, think what a loser I’d be.
I’d walk through the quad, and think, “Oh my God…
These kids are so much younger than me.”“If I Were to Go Back to College”, Avenue Q
It’s been almost exactly a year since I discovered that UNT offered a program in Emergency Administration and Planning. Next Tuesday, I start classes.
I’ll be taking two courses: Introduction to Emergency Management and Disaster Response & Recovery. Tuesday afternoons, I’ll venture up to Denton (about an hour north of Dallas) and knock my six hours of class out in one shot.
I’m quite excited about this. I’ve been interested in natural disasters for a long time (probably from having grown up in a hurricane state, with a grandmother in an earthquake state). This past year with its devastating tsunami and four hurricanes in Florida, has emphasized to me my desire to be part of some action helping people put their lives back together after a disaster.
I’d run off today to help if I could. But, my reality is that I have responsibilities. I have a dog and parrot and bills and a lease. So, I’m doing this the way I feel is most in line with those responsiblities. I’m going to learn more about Emergency Management, a few classes at a time. I’ll continue working full time (my bosses are uber-cool in allowing me to shift my hours to have time for class).
Some day, I may leave the world of web development, and move into this field. Or, I may decide it isn’t for me. I won’t know until I learn more.
So, that’s big.

Good luck to you. There is nothing more satisfying than doing what you really want to do.
I think that’s awesome. Good luck.
Sounds like an awesome plan. Good luck!
That program sounds great. Good luck and watch out for hippies. North Texas is like a commune.
By the way, great Ave. Q line. I’ve been waiting for someone to quote that soundtrack.
I’m very proud of you. I always thought you would do something involved with the weather, due to your interest many years ago in the weather channel. You are also good in taking charge and helping others. Even if the classes and major doesn’t work out, you could do volunteer work – perhaps with the Salvation Army next time of a disaster.
That is if you can take time off work and have bills paid!
yay!
good luck.
AND … the added benefit of going back to school is that you can go thru RUSH WEEK all over again!
**CHUG** THAT BEER! PARTAAY!! PARTAAY!!!
(Oh. Wait. You already do that now.)
Oh boy Leia! You’ll be a smashing success. You always are. And if they don’t love you as much as I do tell big sis Darcy and I’ll give them a knuckle sandwich.
Is the 18th Tuesday? I have ESPN WHOOT!
Good for you
And if you’re really concerned about being older than other people in the class are (like the Ave Q thing implies), don’t worry. Last year I was a 25 year old freshman, and it wasn’t so bad.
