Hot (un)fun in the summertime

July 8th, 2005

My air conditioner hates me. It likes to zoom its unfortunately-electronic thermostat up to 88°, beeping at every degree change.

Several nights ago, it would only do it at 4am.

Now, it won’t stay set on the temperature I put it at for more than five minutes.

My apartment is so embarassingly dirty from my lack of being home for anything more than sleep or studying that I can’t yet tell my landlord about this issue.

Thank goodness Finance class ended tonight. Project turned in Tuesday. Final taken tonight. Fingers crossed for an A, but the B is more realistic.

It’s going to be a long night of thermostat changing and beeping. Darn electronics.

I tried kicking it to no avail.

You forget…your landlord had me as a tenant. Messy apartments don’t faze him. :)

This may sound like a dumb question, but does the electronic thermostat also have a timer on it? It may be that the timer may have been set (by a previous tennant? by default?) to increase at 4am. Just a thought.

It has a timer, but it’s one of those sleep sort of things – stay on for 30 minutes or less. Unless there’s some secret timer that was set to “wait 4 months, then start randomly acting up”. The 4am isn’t a precise time, it’s just symbolic of an early AM hour at which it would begin to annoy me.

I ended up sleeping with the thermostat at 88° last night. Luckily, it had been cloudy and (relatively) cool yesterday, so it wasn’t too hot out overnight. Today, I got up early and cleaned the apartment. Now, I’m just waiting to hear from the landlord and working from home so I can keep turning the thermostat down to keep my menagerie cool.

I just installed a programmable, electronic thermostat here. It has 2 AA batteries that power it. Your problem could be weak batteries.

Not a bad thought, Leia’s dad, but assuming this is a window A/C unit, the thermostat is probably built into the unit and draws power from the wall, as opposed to a battery.
Leia – you might want to Google your model A/C unit to see if anyone else has reported the same problems you’ve been having. It could be a design flaw or a defect. Failing anything else, your landlord should provide you with a replacement A/C unit, especially given that it’s the dead of summer.
