This Apartment is Dead to Me.

July 14th, 2005

Got in my car this morning to discover the ashtray on the floor. “Odd,” I thought to myself. Then it occurred to me that the thing wouldn’t just pop out. Someone had been in my car.

Checked the center console. Checked the glove compartment. CDs — gone. Earrings — gone. The change in the ashtray — gone.

Thankful that I’d taken the work laptop and ipod inside last night. Sometimes I’m lazy and it’s late and I know I won’t get on the computer, so I leave it in the car.

Called Matt, he’s my upstairs neighbor. His car was fine.

All I can think is that I must have left the doors unlocked. Matt was standing outside with Julie when I pulled up behind the building and I was chatting with them as I gathered my things from the car.

I’m not worried about the stuff (though they did take Damien Rice, the bastards). I’d be surprised if they could get more than $20 for it all.

What worries me the most is that someone was out behind our place last night, after midnight, checking our cars. Someone was in my car. Someone violated my space.

And that creeps me out.

I’m sorry. That royally sucks. Such a feeling of violation. Creepy and all that. But it happens in good, bad and everywhere neighborhoods. meh.

Reminded me of the time I forgot to lock my car when I was in college and living in a marginal neighborhood.
Came out and a homeless guy was sleeping in my backseat. It smelled for 2 weeks.
But not as bad as one day I was sick and just finished an exam. I went home to crash and woke up and a guy was standing in the doorway to my bedroom (forgot to lock the front door). Luckly when I stood up I was a foot taller than the dude and he said “are you the guy with the car for sale? no? then left”

The important thing is that you’re OK and that nothing was stolen that can’t be replaced. (Although…they left your car stereo, but took the change in your ashtray?) How much longer do you have on this lease (or is it a month-to-month)?

I’m really sorry to hear about this, Leia. It’s hard getting over knowing that someone has violated your space–I’m glad that they at least didn’t get very much or vandalize/steal your snazzy car.
