Mom Update – Hiatal Hernia Surgery

November 28th, 2005 6 comments

Mom had her surgery for the hiatal hernia today. She’s in recovery right now. The surgeon wasn’t able to completely put her stomach back in the right place, but did repair the hernia to her satisfaction.

Originally, her surgery was scheduled for this evening. It was moved up to early afternoon, which worked out well as I had a flight back to Texas scheduled at the same time. It’s comforting to know that she came through well before I leave town, instead of fretting through my flight.

I’ve Got the Power

Porch Light

This front porch light wouldn’t normally be anything special except that it hasn’t had power since I moved into the house. I had an electrician out this morning and he determined it was a combination of some loose wiring and not screwing the bulb in hard enough. Apparently, even though you think you’ve screwed the bulb enough, you have to screw it more to get it turned on.

Afrim, the electrician from Latin Electric, also helped me figure out what was going on with the power on the back side of the house, so now my house will be all lit up at night.

I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. I’ve had a dark exterior since day one at the house. I even avoided going home Halloween night because I didn’t want to have any trick-or-treaters coming to my door in the dark and I didn’t want to be the new neighbor who hides in the house instead of offering candy.

Shiny Web Bubbles

I’m quoted in today’s Star-Telegram article Internet, Version 2.0 (use login bogusname@yahoo.com / bogusname1) on the “Web 2.0″ trend. I may be the only person who could work “shiny” and “bubble” into a quote in a technology article.

Mom Update

November 13th, 2005 4 comments

Thank you to everyone who submitted birthday wishes for my mom. She hasn’t read them yet, but I talked to her about them last night on the phone.

Unfortunately, Mom spent her birthday in the hospital. She went in Friday, after being up all night sick to her stomach Tuesday night and being weak most of Wednesday and Thursday. As it was a non-chemo week, her doctor was concerned even though she was feeling better. The doctors decided they wanted to run some tests and keep an eye on her.

The results say that her hiatal hernia has advanced to the point that her stomach has twisted and moved into the wrong position, which has shortened her esophagus. She will need surgery to repair her esophagus and stomach. While they are in there, they also plan to take out her gallbladder, which has a polyp which could become cancerous.

The debate right now is do they do the surgery now or let her finish out chemo.

Her oncologist and GYN are comfortable with her stopping the chemo until after the holidays.

The surgeon is worried that without the surgery, blood flow around the stomach could get cut off, which would kill her.

Her current surgeon is not comfortable doing the surgery himself, as he hasn’t done surgery on the esophagus before, so they are looking for another surgeon.

Your continued good wishes aimed at the space coast of Florida are appreciated!

Por Favor

November 7th, 2005 19 comments

I have a favor to ask of you.

It has been a hard past couple of months for my mom. She found out her breast cancer had returned in August. She first had it when she was in her early 30′s, before my sister and I were born. All these years, she has been cancer-free.

Mom had a second mastectomy at the end of August. At that time, the doctors determined she would need chemotherapy. Her second round (of eight) was last week.

When I talked to her Saturday, she was in good spirits, but I know this is hard for her. Her hair has started falling out and she was sick for several days following this round.

So, here’s where the favor comes in.

It’s my mom’s birthday this Saturday, and I want you to send her some love.

Drop a comment here wishing her a happy birthday. Or, if you’d rather send an e-mail, you can send it to me and I’ll forward it to her.

I think she’ll enjoy reading anything you have to share.

Thanks.
