Mom Update
Thank you to everyone who submitted birthday wishes for my mom. She hasn’t read them yet, but I talked to her about them last night on the phone.
Unfortunately, Mom spent her birthday in the hospital. She went in Friday, after being up all night sick to her stomach Tuesday night and being weak most of Wednesday and Thursday. As it was a non-chemo week, her doctor was concerned even though she was feeling better. The doctors decided they wanted to run some tests and keep an eye on her.
The results say that her hiatal hernia has advanced to the point that her stomach has twisted and moved into the wrong position, which has shortened her esophagus. She will need surgery to repair her esophagus and stomach. While they are in there, they also plan to take out her gallbladder, which has a polyp which could become cancerous.
The debate right now is do they do the surgery now or let her finish out chemo.
Her oncologist and GYN are comfortable with her stopping the chemo until after the holidays.
The surgeon is worried that without the surgery, blood flow around the stomach could get cut off, which would kill her.
Her current surgeon is not comfortable doing the surgery himself, as he hasn’t done surgery on the esophagus before, so they are looking for another surgeon.
Your continued good wishes aimed at the space coast of Florida are appreciated!

Hey Leia-
Your Mom is part of my great memories of high school. I’m keeping her, you, Carolyn and your Dad in my thoughts and prayers.
Katie
Thanks, Katie. We appreciate it. Likewise, high school wouldn’t have been the same without you and your family.
Leia, do you remember at one of those high school get-togethers at your house that your mom asked me to make sure you drank milk in college? I think in the almost three years we lived together, we never had milk in the fridge. Ah, well. Tell your mom I’m thinking about her and if we’re ever in college again together, I’ll try to do better.
Your Mom will be in my thoughts and prayers.
