The Tax Man Cometh

January 23rd, 2007

A fiscally prudent person would save small amounts all year to pay their property taxes. I was not such a person. The last two months have been spent saving and cutting back to pay the property tax bill by the end of this month, and I did it. This has shown me that I could be saving a lot more money for the finer things in life, which are not giant cokes at Sonic.

Does your mortgage not withhold funds in escrow for taxes? Wells Fargo pays all my taxes for me so I don’t have to think about it – it’s nice. I have a hard enough time saving up for income taxes (read: I don’t), I’d hate to have property taxes on top of that.
Maybe your mortgage company could do this for you?

My mortgage company never set up the escrow account for me. I remember them mentioning it once, but I said I’d wait to set it up and they never sent me paperwork to do so. I called them about it once, but it seemed too much of a hassle at that late date.
I’m thinking it might be better to get in the habit of saving it monthly myself in a good savings account, and earn a little interest for myself on top.
