Beat Down by the Bridal Industry
February 26th, 2007
I am tired of looking for a wedding dress. Is it too much to ask for a simple, below-the-knee to mid-calf length, ivory or white, plus-size dress that is maybe a little bit modest for under $200? I don’t think I’m being too demanding.

Is it important that it be a wedding dress? Do do you just want a white/off white semi formal?
Are you willing to go sleeveless? This is lovely in ivory. It’s a simple style so I think it would be very comfortable to wear.

If that’s too low cut or informal this is much more formal:

It also depends how far you’re willing to stray from white. A pale silver would be stunning on you.
Have you considered having it made? When I graduated from high school, we all wore bridal-looking white dresses and my mom and I found two patterns that approximated the look I wanted, fabric and a local woman to do it for under $200. Turned out well!
Oh yeah, forgot to say: I saw a bunch of really cute bridesmaid dresses in ivory and white, all more casual and cheaper than bridal.
It’s not important that it is a wedding dress at all. In fact, having it not be a wedding dress would make it cheaper. I’ve been looking at the bridesmaids dresses, as they’re more informal. Real wedding dresses are just more dress than I want. I do like this dress — it’s pretty clssy looking on that model.
I like it!
JCrew has some cute “bridesmaids” dresses that go up to a size 16.
